Date bars
Ingredients 1 cup butter
3 eggs
2 teaspoon water
3 cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
8 oz dates, chopped (don't buy the pre-chopped ones, they suck)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup walnuts, chopped
Dash salt
Directions
Make and chill the dough
  1. Cream butter.
  2. Add 2 cups sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time beating well after each.
  4. Combine soda and water, blend into cream.
  5. Add dates and mix.
  6. Sift flour, spices, salt together and add slowly.
  7. Mix in nuts.
  8. Chill several hours.
Bake the dough
  1. Pre-heat oven to 350°F.
  2. On floured board shape dough into rolls about 10 inches long and 3/4 inch diameter. Place on buttered pans.
  3. With fingers, flatten rolls to 1/4 inch thick.
  4. Sprinkle with sugar (I use the fancy Sugar in the Raw if I have it, or just use regular sugar).
  5. Bake 15-18 minutes.
  6. While still hot, make diagonal cuts across flattened rolls to make bars.
Makes 5-6 dozen.
